Insider Tip
Keen surfers must visit Wavegliders surfshop for their unique collection of clothing and handmade classic surfboards, that are a work of art. The friendly owners are full of hints and tips on the local restaurant scene and the best surf beaches.
We’re big fans of Portugal and this set of apartments, whimsically named You and The Sea, is luring us back for adventures on Portugal’s wild coastline, where surfing waves come thick and fast, seafood is plentiful and cosmopolitan Lisbon is less than an hour away.
You and The Sea is located in charming fishing village Ericeira, a world surfing reserve that has waves to suit everyone from beginner to pro. Depending on who you’re travelling with, there are one- to four-bedroom apartments to choose from. Interiors are simply furnished with a pared-back décor, wooden floors and a stylish colour scheme that takes accents from the sea. On-site there’s also an informal restaurant serving pizzas, grilled fish and salads, plus the spa provides massages and facials.
The apartments make a comfortable base from which to head out on surf lessons or simply hire a board and take your pick of the world-class waves. When you’re not surfing barrels, you can wander around the pretty, whitewashed town, sampling its seafood delights with a cold beer. A trip to Ericeira can be easily combined with Lisbon, where you can explore cobbled streets and ancient ruins, and experience its dynamic foodie scene.
