I love getting under the skin of a country whether it be under-the-radar destinations like Colombia, or cultural beauties like Sri Lanka or closer to home on the pretty Balearic islands. Read on for my travel favourites.
Not only is Sri Lanka a beach lovers paradise, and a haven for simply delicious cuisine and spices, but it has an abundance of wildlife and incredible landscapes. Elephants can be seen across the island, and I was lucky enough to spot the elusive leopard in Yala National Park.
One of my favourite Sri Lankan experiences would have to be spent on the scenic train ride across the hill country from Kandy to Nanu Oya; the train winds its way though lush green tea plantations and sellers pass through the train with fresh, spicy samosas – heaven!
Colombia has a traumatic past that for years kept its stunning landscapes, picturesque towns and breath-taking nature totally hidden. The communities of Colombia have worked hard to overcome the past and when you go, you will come across the most friendly, kind, and generous people
One of my best New Years Eve was spent in Cartagena, enjoying the local street parties with an unforgettable firework display above the old walled city, followed by dancing until the early hours in Cartagena’s best salsa club!
I’m a big fan of the Balearics, the four main islands Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera are so pretty with remote coves, pristine nature and traditional little villages. I love the fact that they’re so easy to get to but are relatively unspoilt.
The soft-white sandy beach at Bibibeca in Menorca is one of my favourite spots with the famous Los Bucaneros beach bar, with sprawling seating over the rocks. The frozen gin cocktails on a hot day are the best!
There is nothing better than seeing wild animals in their natural habitat – it has to be one of the most magical and memorable experiences! Some of my favourite moments include swimming with whale sharks off the coast of Isla Mujeres in Mexico, bush walking in Matabo National Park, Zimbabwe and getting up close to a family of endangered white rhinos, coming face to face with a magnificent silverback gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, or just simply watching fireflies sparkle in the night sky in Kerala. I also like an adrenaline rush when I’m away, from zip-lining across the Zambezi River with the mighty Victoria Falls roaring ahead, to paragliding off one of the highest commercial take-off sites in the world – Babadag Mountain in the South of Turkey.
