Insider tip
Go in September. The sun still shines and the sea is still delightfully warm. And it is not too hot to enjoy walking the Kalderimi (donkey paths).
Irene Villa is a great choice for families or groups looking for a peaceful holiday in the beautifully un-touristy and laid-back region of Pelion. With a master bedroom and ensuite on the first floor, and three further bedrooms downstairs, the layout means Irene Villa could work well for a family with older children. It also has its own swimming pool set among the old olive trees which surround the house, but with a small, almost private beach just 5 minutes through the groves, you’ll have to choose where to take your morning swim.
The two-storey villa has ample space and flexibility for groups as both storeys have large terraces with outside eating areas. The view from the upstairs terrace, particularly of the setting sun, is spell-binding and a great spot for a sundowner gathering. The living room is spacious, light and comfortably furnished, and the kitchen has a dishwasher and is well-equipped to make traditional Greek fare such a meze bought from local markets at Argalasti or Milina. Eating out is also recommended. The seafront tavernas in Horto serve delicious freshly cooked fish, grilled octopus and squid stew.
There are numerous beaches nearby including the beautiful sandy coves of the Aegean, such as Potistika and Paltsi, as well as interesting villages such as Milies, Tsagarada, Damouchari and Trikari. A boat trip though the sparkling waters is a wonderful way to explore the area, stopping at beach side tavernas for icy beers. It’s also easy to go by ferry from Platanias nearby, to visit Skiathos and the other islands of the Sporades.
