Kasbah du Toubkal

An authentic mountain hideaway, just an hour from the bustle of Marrakech.

Sustainable Highs

Kasbah du Toubkal was conceived more as a Berber hospitality centre than a traditional hotel. Focused on sustainable tourism, it employs local staff and a percentage of profits go directly to fund community projects.

Set amid Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, Kasbah du Toubkal is a peaceful mountain hideaway that is heaven for hikers. Spectacularly located on a rocky outcrop in the village of Imlil in the Toubkal National Park, Kasbah du Toubkal offers panoramic views, superb trekking and traditional Berber hospitality.

Travel Made Positive

  • Staff are recruited from the local village
  • A 5% surcharge to guest stays contribute to the community and Education For All, a charity that funds girls’ education
  • Ingredients are sourced locally
  • Sustainable design means low energy consumption and high levels of insulation
  • Access is only by foot with your luggage carried by mules
  • The kasbah has won many awards for its sustainable ethos

Remote and Authentic

Just an hour by road from Marrakech, this secluded sanctuary is a world away from the hubbub of the city and can be easily combined as a fabulously contrasting holiday with time in both the city and the mountains. Your arrival is memorable – on foot, with your luggage carried by mules. Be greeted with a warm welcome to the traditional village of Imlil, incredible panoramic views and the restored fortress. Inside, décor is authentic with tiled floors, wooden furnishings and colour from Berber rugs, cushions and curtains, decorative curios and local art.

Bedrooms at the Kasbah

Rooms feature carved walnut furniture and hand-woven carpets, with a range of options to suit both couples and families. The spacious Deluxe Rooms open onto a private balcony overlooking the gardens and mountains, while simply furnished Standard Rooms have beautifully framed views over the village and valley. The three-bedroom Garden House is ideal for groups seeking extra space and privacy and has a sliding door that opens out onto a wraparound terrace with spellbinding views onto the mountains.

Things To Do

Aside from the views, walking is the main attraction. These range from gentle rambles to demanding multi-day treks supported by local guides. Follow ancient footpaths through walnut groves and along terraced mountainsides or spend a night in the Kasbah’s own mountain hut while tackling Mount Toubkal – North Africa’s highest mountain. Upon your return you can rejuvenate with a mint tea followed by a trip to the Kasbah’s hammam. Then feast on traditional Moroccan cuisine in the cosy dining room, where hearty tagines come with fluffy couscous served by the light of candles.

Good to Know

In keeping with local customs, the Kasbah doesn’t serve alcohol – although you’re welcome to bring your own.

What we Think

For humbling authenticity, genuine sustainability and plenty of opportunities for hiking, Kasbah du Toubkal is a special place to stay, surrounded by the soul-stirring peaks of the High Atlas Mountains.
