Botania, Relais and Spa

Full of charm, Botania Relais and Spa is a characterful hideaway hotel on the verdant island of Ischia, the quieter and more authentic neighbour to glitzier Capri and the Amalfi Coast. The hotel submerges itself in the surrounding natural greenery, giving it a lush, secluded feel and the bedrooms are peaceful rooms and suites, some coming with their own private, shady garden and jacuzzi.

The island of Ischia is a pleasure to explore, discovering tropical gardens, pretty pebbly beaches and authentic villages. A short boat ride will take you to tiny restaurants clasped into the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, accessible only by sea. The soil of Ischia is volcanic and fertile, providing the island with a plethora of homegrown produce, which in turn informs the kitchens and restaurants on the island. Botania also has its own organic garden which features heavily on the menu alongside freshly caught seafood, fish and homemade pasta.

“Pretty as a postcard, the island of Ischia is a natural paradise with a gourmet culinary scene to match.”

Must do

Botania is home to vegetarian restaurant Il Mirto – a rarity in the Amalfi, and it was recently awarded a Michelin green star. Vegetables are presented in the most imaginative of ways in both vegetarian or vegan menus, which will certainly challenge the way you think about fine dining.

Palazzo Seneca

We’re big fans of Umbria – Tuscany’s neighbour – which shares a wealth of hilly landscapes, cultural hilltop towns and incredible culinary legacy, yet without the hordes of crowds. Palazzo Seneca, a 16th century palace located in Norcia, is a great place to base yourself to explore the food and wine offerings of Umbria while enjoying the friendly service and homely atmosphere of this Relais & Chateaux hotel.

Immerse yourself in Umbrian foodie traditions in Norcia, such as a truffle hunting tour – seeking the elusive ‘black gold’ or trying your hand at making ricotta with a local cheesemaker. Take a day to visit the region’s wineries: standouts include a historic, organic vineyard and a modern, prestigious award-winning wine producer. Try your hand at the art of Umbrian cookery, gathering herbs and wild fruit to create simple Umbrian fare and herbal teas or enjoy time with the hotel’s Michelin-starred chef, learning the skill of cooking with truffles. If you have a sweet tooth, discover Umbria’s artisan chocolate industry – meeting the ‘makers’ and tasting their delicious craft and having a go at making some sweet treats yourself.

“Undulating Umbria is full of opportunity for the foodie explorer and staying at Palazzo Seneca opens doors to these culinary experiences.”

Must do

Palazzo Seneca is home to an excellent restaurant Vespasia, which has not only a Michelin-star, but a green Michelin star for its endeavours in sustainable food practices. Local Umbrian ingredients headline the menu, conjuring delicious dishes with lentils, beans, truffles and wild boar products.
