Settle into your hotel before heading out to explore this dynamic city where ancient history fuses with a thriving food culture, fascinating museums showcase Vietnam’s profound culture and the city pulses with energy with influences from Russia, India, Japanese and French occupation, World War II and the Vietnam War.

Designed by Bill Bensley, the hotel has an opulent style with whimsical flourishes inspired by the Roaring Twenties, making it a characterful place to stay. Although there is no outdoor pool, the spa features a ‘wet relaxation zone’ promising rejuvenation. Don’t miss dining at the Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by a skilled Japanese chef whose speciality is teppanyaki.

Day 6-8
Hue, Vietnam
Head back to Hanoi for a short connecting flight to Hue and be introduced to the former capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, located on the Perfume River and dotted with UNESCO-listed monuments such as the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City.
One of the best ways to explore Hue is by cyclo and on this guided tour, you will stop for drinks and Hue foodie specialities such as Hue rolls and pancakes before crossing the historic Trang Tien bridge to enter the ancient citadel of Hue before seeking out the perfect dessert stop at a ‘sweet soup’ café. The following day, take a more rural route by motorbike absorbing local life as you go – families making conical hats, fishermen on the rivers, rice farmers and villagers tending to their gardens. Take a pause at the landmark bridge Thanh Toan, hear nuns chanting at the Thuy Xuan temple and visit the Crying Elephant temple where these noble pachyderms were worshipped.
Stay
Ancient Hue Garden Houses
Found on a picturesque bend of the Perfume River, this authentic hotel is located in a small historic village in leafy, local surroundings. The atmospheric Garden Houses pay homage to the royal family, crafted from teak and topped by handmade tiles with its varied cuisine a highlight from delicious breakfast spreads to private dining accompanied by a traditional orchestral performance.
Stay
Anantara Hoi An Resort
Our preferred choice in Hoi An is the impressive Anantara Hoi An Resort, a colonial-style set of buildings nestled along the Thu Bon River. A serene and stylish retreat with a pool, spa and slick service, the hotel also allows for easy exploration of Hoi An – the city’s historic heart is just a short stroll away.

To tap into the city’s sobering history, take a trip to the Cu Chi tunnels via a waterway cruise. The narrow tunnels were built by guerrilla fighters during the Vietnamese-American war. Experience the tunnels first-hand by crawling through a short section, then have the honour of dining with a war veteran. Another fascinating day trip sees you visit My Tho in the Mekong Delta to cruise on a sampan boat, stopping by coconut plantations, meeting bee farmers and tasting banana wine and coconut candies.
